China’s Disinfo Machine Got an Upgrade
OpenAI says more Chinese groups are using its AI for spying & spreading fake news.
Not that anyone on our team is surprised—but it’s something else to see it confirmed.
If we needed a reminder of why this work matters—this is it.
This past week, OpenAI confirmed that the world’s biggest propaganda engines are now running on artificial intelligence.
China is at the front of the pack.
In a new threat report, OpenAI revealed that Chinese operatives have been using ChatGPT to generate disinformation at scale: fake marketing, social media posts, internal comms for covert ops, and even surveillance tools. It’s fast. It’s multilingual.
And it’s growing.
One Chinese-linked operation, cheekily dubbed Sneer Review, spammed TikTok, X, Reddit, and Facebook with AI-written posts and replies in English, Chinese, and Urdu.
It also produced a fake exposé slamming a Taiwanese game—and then turned around and evaluated its own campaign with internal performance reviews. 👀
So I guess disinfo squads now have KPIs.
Another group impersonated journalists, translated sensitive emails with AI, and drafted propaganda aimed at a U.S. Senator.
Whether the letter was ever sent isn’t clear.
But the intent is. This isn’t trolling. It’s digitized espionage.
In just three months, OpenAI shut down ten influence operations. Four came from China. The others? Russia, Iran, North Korea, Cambodia, and the Philippines.
Tactics range from phishing and polarization to social engineering and real-time surveillance. Small-scale in some cases, yes—but all of them coordinated and evolving fast.
Canada is already in the blast zone.
Foreign actors are shaping public debate, undermining trust in science and journalism, and spying on civil society.
AI accelerates the threat. It makes everything cheaper, faster, and harder to trace.
That’s why Get Fact exists.
